Perinatal Health
Pregnancy and delivery causes changes in the body. Muscles, ligaments and connective tissue stretch and have a harder time managing their support functions.
During pregnancy the abdominal wall stretches and can sometimes separate. This is called a diastasis rectus abdominus. You might notice a bulge down the centre of your abdominals when you move or that you can sink your fingers into the space between your abdominals across the midline of your tummy.
Also, the deep abdominal muscles (transversus abdominus) and your pelvic floor are stretched and may not function properly. These factors can result in low back, symphysis pubis or pelvic girdle pain.
Your pelvic floor and connective tissues supporting your pelvic organs (bladder, uterus and rectum) can become stretched or torn, resulting in urinary or
fecal incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse.
Our body adapts to these changes; however, these adaptations might not be ideal and can lead to problems in both the short and long term. Life with a new baby is not easy, but it is important to take time for yourself to address current problems and avoid future ones arising from existing incorrect adaptation strategies.
At Dayan Physio we have the knowledge, skills and equipment to assess and treat the above issues to ensure that you return to optimum health and function.
